The artist
Last February, during a residency in Paris, Sima encountered a monumental fountain, entirely frozen. Water had turned to crystalized icicles, encasing the structure in a still, fragile beauty. The sight stirred an unexpected emotional response, prompting her to write a reflection on inner and outer stillness, and the illusion of motion in a world that continues to move forward.
This encounter became the conceptual anchor for the work. Two sculptural fountains were created: one, rendered in ceramic and glass, captures the moment of physical freezing; the other, a self-portrait, depicts tears continuously flowing from the eyes. Drawing from the myth of Niobe—whose sorrow turned her to stone while her tears endured—the work explores the transformation of the body into a vessel of emotion.
Here, the mechanics of the urban fountain are reimagined through the lens of human feeling. Emotion becomes a circulatory system, grief as a form of motion.
